Farmstay Sweden is an association and a brand for vacation accommodations in genuine farm environment. Today the association consists of 80 unique farms, offering either self-catering, where guests look after themselves, or bed and breakfast/country hotel options with a personal and homey atmosphere. As a guest at Farmstay Sweden, you can expect high-quality accommodations and enjoy a vibrant countryside with a clear focus on sustainability.
Staying on a farm, getting to know farm life, tasting local flavours, and explore the great outdoors – the whole concept of Farmstay Sweden rests on experiencing “simple country life”, and does so since the 1980s. However, the concept really took off in the last few years when even younger guests visited our farms in search of rural inspiration and recreation.
This is why Farmstay Sweden set off to refine and reshape into an even more sustainable travel trade, by applying a certification to all affiliated farms. The latest sustainability initiative is supported by the Swedish Board of Agriculture and the European Agricultural Fund.
“We may be a small player in the overall tourism industry, but we aim to set a good example and make as little impact as possible on nature and the environment through our ‘Sustainable Farm’ project. This is our way of contributing to the global goals for 2030”, explains board chairman Jan Jeppsson.
The goal is to increase environmental engagement throughout the association through education and practical tools, that work for different types of operations: cottage/cabin rentals, B&Bs, or farm hotels. The “Sustainable Farm” certificate makes it easy for member farms to communicate that they are an integral part of a “new” tourism industry. And more importantly, it assures guests about their choice of vacation accommodation!
So, when you see a label next to the familiar Farmstay Sweden (Bo på Lantgård) sign indicating a “sustainable farm” (Hållbar Gård), you can be assured that the accommodation has met all the sustainability criteria in various areas, such as waste management, energy consumption, food provision, staff management, local community engagement, water treatment, and cleaning + chemicals standard.
