The Swedish polkagris, or “polka candy,” is a traditional Swedish confection that has a rich history. Originating in the small town of Gränna, which is located on the shores of Lake Vättern in Sweden, the polkagris has its roots in the 19th century. The polkagris was created in the early 1850s by a woman named Amalia Eriksson. After the death of her husband, Eriksson sought a way to support herself and her children. She began making and selling this distinctive candy. The candy is made from sugar, glucose, and peppermint oil, which accounts for its characteristic flavor. It is traditionally hand-pulled, which gives the candy its distinctive striped appearance. The process of pulling the candy also aerates it, making it lighter and chewier.
The popularity of polkagris grew, and Gränna became known as “the polkagris town.” Over the years, it became a tourist attraction where visitors could see the candy being made and purchase the sweet treat. The polkagris has become a symbol of Swedish culture and heritage, often associated with Christmas and other festive occasions. It is especially prominent during holiday markets and events in Sweden.
